As in all martial arts , jiu jitsu can be found in different modalities , such as personal defense, wrestling, new aza, duo, among many others.
Depending on the country you are in, you can find this martial art in one modality or another.
Traditional Japanese Jiu-Jitsu
The Bushi (warriors of Japan) had a long tradition and reputation in combat with melee weapons. They were real specialists in this type of combat, perfecting the use of different weapons such as the katana, the fan or the spear, among others.
As a result of these warriors a need arose, that of defending themselves when their rival managed to disarm them . They needed a method to fight without weapons against both an armed and unarmed enemy.
It had to be taken into account that both the fighter and his opponent were equipped with armor, so that the agility of the movements could not be developed at 100% and the blows would not often produce the necessary impact to bring down the enemy.
That is why in Japan this fighting style was developed which uses only the human body as a defense weapon avoiding the blows focusing on neutralizing the enemy by means of the keys, throws and strangulations, being able to do them both with the opponent on the ground and standing.
Therefore Jiu Jitsu is part of the set of skills developed by warriors during that time called Bujutsu, fighting style that brings together techniques of combat with weapons and without weapons.
Subsequently, more movements within Jiu Jitsu were included as kicks or knees and others that needed greater agility thanks to the change of clothing of those warriors.
During the Sengoku era (1467-1603) they carried, as we mentioned before, the classic Samurai armor that we all know, limiting their movements. It was during the Edo era (1603-1867) when they went to dress Kimono allowing them more mobility.
Little by little, some weapons that were considered within the techniques of Jiu-Jitsu were also included, but these were characterized by being small, light or not very strong.
Although in some countries some modalities of this sport are used for competition. In its origin this was only used as a defense for the aggressors.
The category of the fighter is deduced by the color of the belt he uses, in addition to using a specific kimono for this sport.
