The meaning of Muay Thai , if we translate it literally, comes from the words Muay (combat) and Thai (Thai, meaning free person) for what we might call Thai Boxing.
Muay Thai has its origin in Siam , now known as Thailand . The ancient capital of this kingdom was located in Sukhotai towards the year (1238-1408).
Since it was always at war with Burma and Cambodia , the kingdom was forced to seek a form of defense. It consisted in instructing his soldiers in the use of weapons such as spears and swords, in addition to using his own body as a weapon in short distances.
Thanks to this was born the art of muay thai which was essential to know by all the population, especially by aspiring to the throne if they wanted to become kings.
During the following centuries the Muay Thai was evolving, although it was not until the reign of King narai (1604-1690), when it became a professional sport.
On March 17, 1774, a championship was held outside of Thailand in which Nhai Khanom Tomdefeated 10 boxers of King Angwa . Thanks to this achievement, Nai Khanom Tom was rewarded with the title of ” Father of Muay Thai “. Since that day on March 17 is known worldwide as the day of muay thai .
